Traditional paddle making

This 6 -7 hour class, begins with a discussion of lumber species that are appropriate for paddle making and how to choose the right piece of lumber for carving.

(please see the bottom of the page for class requirements)

A Greenland paddle is intended to to custom fit only one person.

With that concept in mind we will we will  examine various paddle options and discuss the advantages that each option accentuates. Then we will measure each person and match them with a paddle blank that fits and feel comfortable to you...

Once you are matched with a paddle blank we will discuss how you can mark and cut a paddle blank at home in the event you want to make another one.

We will then discuss tool safety and carving techniques while we outline how to carve a paddle.

Its then  time to start working on your paddle.

Throughout the day we will be interacting with you to give pointers and feedback, to answer question and to help out when needed.

At the end of the day we will all head for the water with a new paddle in hand!
