Storm Paddles
The storm paddle is a shortened variation of a Greenland paddle which, as the name suggests, is for use in high winds. With the shorter storm paddle the kayaker uses a sliding stroke, shifting the paddle from side to side with each stroke. This reduces the amount of off water blade in the air thus, reducing wind resistance. Today many paddlers use a storm paddle as a spare storing it on the front deck in easy reach if needed.
A storm paddle has about the same blade area as a full length Greenland paddle. Most of the size difference is in the loom length. The loom width of a storm paddle is one to two fist widths. Generally a storm paddle is 6’ or less in length with a 4” to 6” loom. It is important that a storm paddle fits on your front deck so it’s a good idea to measure your boat before order to make sure the paddle will fit.
Storm paddles are available with all the same options as a full size Greenland paddle.
