When ordering a paddle a variety of  choices and options are available to you. Their are some basic choices that we can help guide you through but, in the end, a paddle should be what is comfortable for you and makes you happy.
Custom paddles require about 3-4 weeks to be delivered to your door. Check our In stock list for current inventory and specials.

Prices listed below are based on paddles from the follow wood species, other wood species are available but may effect the pricing ( red or white cedar, pine, poplar, or Spanish cedar)

Determining the correct length-  (click here for details) The length of a Traditional paddle is commonly determined by standing up straight and extending your hand up over your head. Your finger tips should just be able to wrap over the top of the paddle.  With experience you may find that a longer or shorter paddle is best for your boat and body.

     Storm paddles are generally 6' in length. However, a storm paddle should fit on the deck of your boat. To fit the boat a storm paddle may be a good deal shorter then 6'.  Be sure to measure your boat before ordering. 

    A Single blade paddle should measure from  under your chin to the floor for canoe paddles. These are basic guidelines and many folks will find that they prefer a paddle longer of shorter than this measure. We suggest trying a few paddles to see what feels good to you. For a single blade kayak paddle please call for directions to determine the proper length.

Loom width- The loom width of a Traditional paddle  generally ranges from 17-21". To determine loom width stand up straight with your arms at your side. Keeping you elbows against your sides, raise your fore arms to 90 degrees so that your hand are out in front of you. Make the "ok" sign with each hand as though you were holding a paddle horizontally in front of you. Then, have someone measure the distance between the centers of each of your first fingers.  On a storm paddle we make the loom 6" or about 1 to 1.5 fist widths.

Shoulder shape- The shape of the shoulders on a paddle is entirely a matter of personal choice. The advantage in having shoulders is that they provide a reference or indexing point on the paddle. We make 3 different shoulder shapes.  A hard shoulder, that is abrupt out ward flare. A soft shoulder has a smooth arch that widens the paddle by about 1/2" over 1" of length.  A shoulder less paddle has a straight edge that starts and the loom and widens evenly as you move toward the blade tip. A shoulder less paddle allows your hands to slide smoothly & evenly over the paddle. This allows you a relatively even grip anyplace on the paddle. The choice is solely a matter of personal taste.

Lamination styles-  The visual appeal of a paddle is of coarse an important consideration. However, the style of lamination can effect the way a paddle feels. Paddles with horizontal lamination tend to be more flexible over their length. Vertically laminated paddles tend to be a little stiffer in the way they perform. Again this is a matter for personal choice. Please keep in mind that the more Lamination layers that are added the stuffer the paddles action becomes.

Materials and Weight- The materials you choose for a paddle will profoundly affect the way a paddle feels and performs as well as it's durability. Hardwoods are heavy but durable. Soft woods are light but are nicked more easily. We make a lot of paddles for touring out of various cedar species with great success. However we also use hardwoods in some of our products to enhance the appearance and durability of a paddle. Their are an endless number lamination combination available to you.
