
Kodiak Island
Kodiak Island is located on the eastern side of the Gulf of Alaska. It is located at approximately 57° 47' N Latitude, 152° 24' W Longitude. The area encompasses 6,463 sq. miles of land and 5,383 sq. miles of water. Kodiak Island has been inhabited since 8,000 B.C.
Spanish explorer Juan Pérez visited this island in 1774 followed by Captain Cook in 1778. By 1792 Russian fur trappers had established a permanent settlement on the island. Sea otter pelts were the primary incentive for Russian exploration at that time. Kodiak was the first capital of Russian Alaska, which moved to Sitka when Alaska was purchased by the U.S. in 1867

The original paddle upon which this is based is part of a collection at the museum of anthropology and ethnography in Leningrad. These Kodiak Island paddle is shown in Alaskan Yellow Cedar. The red strips are carved out and painted. The original paddle was red with black strips but, I thought this red stripe on black was a cool looking variation.

Paddle-IB 161 A
The original paddle upon which this is based is part of a collection at the Danish national museum in Copenhagen item number IB 161A. This paddle is based on a description by David Zimmerly.
This Kodiak Island paddle is shown in Alaskan yellow cedar. The black strips are carved out and painted. The finish show is a gloss urethane.

This Kodiak paddle, made of Alaskan yellow cedar, is based on a cross section of Kodiak paddle shapes. I left it natural because I just liked the way it looked. We can make adaptations to historic shapes and designs to accommodate your vision of how the paddle should look.
